In-Grade Raise: One Member’s Story

contract

We bargained Article 61 – Self-Initiated In-Grade Salary Adjustment Pilot Program so that we can self-initiate an in-grade review and receive up to a 10-percent raise without a full reclassification of the position.

It’s geared toward rewarding experience – and retaining workers – so it applies only to members who have been in the same title for five years.

Article 61 is meant to address frustrations of workers who have stayed at the university for years but not advanced towards the salary mid-point or maximum.

Justin’s story (1 min) >>

Justin Esperon has been a Dining Hall Supervisor since 2005, a skilled and dedicated Rutgers worker and a proud union member.

The new Article 61 provides two criteria for self-initiated in-grade raise:

First: Changes to the scope and responsibility of the job;

Second: Market equity, so if you are doing the same work in the same title as others around you yet making less.

Justin and several others told their stories to Rutgers management in negotiations to help reach the new article. At this point, the article is a pilot program to test out the process, so anyone who meets the criteria within the this or the next fiscal year should apply for the increase.
