Self-initiated reclassifications can come with up to a 15% raise (without higher level approval for more) and should reflect new responsibilities members are already performing. This is a distinction from applying for and accepting a higher graded position at Rutgers when seeking a new job.
Major classification factors considered are:
Knowledge: Education & skills required; Determination of technical depth, breadth, and relation skills
Problem solving: Environment – whether routine, standard, or broadly defined
Accountability: Autonomy, freedom to act, impact on organization, authority
(See: Article 35 – Reclassification)
Article 35 provides the ability for members to self-initiate a reclassification request, rather than going through a potentially reluctant (or distracted) manager, supervisor, director or department, who might sit on a request for extended periods of time. It also provides members the opportunity to seek recognition and compensation for duties that have evolved to become your responsibility over time.
Do you have questions about the reclassification progress? Email union@ura-aft.org with individual questions or to request a meeting on your campus to walk through the process.
