URA has called on Rutgers management to expand use of hybrid/remote scheduling options due to the anticipated increased traffic congestion generated by FIFA World Cup 2026 and large-scale events in New York and Philadelphia to celebrate the United States’ 250 birthday leading up to July 4.
“These events will generate significant vehicular traffic and public transit ridership on top of local traffic,” according to the NJ Department of Transportation. “The heaviest demand is anticipated to be between 5 hours before and 5 hours after kickoff.”
While some departments and schools have already planned for remote work on FIFA game days for everyone other than essential workers, the union has called on management to provide extra flexibility for everyone during these times of extraordinary circumstances, citing circumstances similar to University Closings.
We have been informed that university management will suggest some framework for flexibility, but it will be up to URA members and campus leaders to make sure their departments are adhering to the overall policies. We will issue follow up messages once university management has made its position clear.
