On August 27, 2025, Rutgers Management sent an email to IP&O Staff in New Brunswick/Piscataway stating they were “excited to announce” that current UKG Kronos time clocks were being upgraded to facial recognition. Workers have been instructed to enroll by providing a face scan without their consent. We have also learned that URA employees in Dining in New Brunswick/Piscataway have been clocking in for over a year with facial recognition without providing consent! Additionally, management has expanded facial recognition to buildings and/or departments on Camden and Newark.
Increasing workplace surveillance opens the door to abuse, including the capture and dissemination of our faces for dangerous and illicit uses. Management says our data is safe. The record shows that’s not a guarantee.
WE DEMAND That Rutgers management:
- Implement notice and consent for any biometrics used in timekeeping.
- Use alternative authentication methods for those who decline consent.
- Delete all biometric template data for any employee enrolled prior to consent.
