Press Release: Rutgers Unions Demand Reversal of Hiring Freeze That Will Harm Faculty, Staff, Students, University as a Whole

Coalition of Rutgers Unions

“The Union of Rutgers Administrators represents staff across all three campuses and in every off campus Rutgers location in all 21 NJ counties,” said Christine O’Connell, URA president. “In many instances, our members are the face of Rutgers in the community and are who students interact with from admission to graduation, including in dining, housing and every academic department. A threatened hiring freeze on our already understaffed members harms the service to all of the Rutgers community in all aspects and devalues the commitment we bring to Rutgers University. The proposed Rutgers FY27 budget is over $2 billion more than in 2022, when we were coming out of the COVID pandemic and we have fewer staff and more work than ever. Rather than reduce hiring, Rutgers should bolster their hiring of staff rather than high level administrators who have no contact with students, faculty and our community.”
