URA members have been sharing experiences with Family and Medical Leave At Rutgers. As we bargain to improve FMLA, we need to explain how leave administration at Rutgers should be improved. Did your experience cause undue stress or harm?

Below is what we are hearing so far:

  • “My experience was regarding Family Leave Insurance. Human Resources was not educated in this at all. I had to reach out to the Governor’s office and only then was I reimbursed my FLI time.
My leave specialist was constantly changing, and I was never informed until I would have to contact UHR about why I have not heard from them. When I called to verify a switch to bonding leave and said that I got the all clear from the doctor at my 6-week appointment, the leave specialist argued with me that I should have already been back from disability even though I had a c-section with an 8-week recovery time. After this phone call, I had to urgently contact my doctor’s office for proof that I did need the full 8-week c section recovery time.“
  • “UHR should be retrained on FMLA laws. Yes, it caused stress because I am dealing with a medical condition and it had nothing to do with me providing documentation, but HR can be very intrusive and ask questions that are inappropriate and should not be asked.
To be honest, they made the entire process very confusing for me… There were many times throughout the process that they forgot who I was and my situation, making it increasingly more stressful and frustrating.“
  • “I had someone who consistently made mistakes – big mistakes. I repeatedly asked for a new representative. It was ignored. More mistakes were made…It was so stressful. They do not know maternity leave laws. My rep said they default to RU rules which in this case is not accurate, NJ law trumps RU rules. Wrong dates, wrong amount of time, incorrect name/address, incorrect reason for leave were just a few things that occurred. It is very clear that these people are not experts in leave.“
  • “It is a very confusing process, lack of clear instructions and directions, too many case workers for the same case. They did not send clear documentation via email, and most were sent to my postal address not to the address where my emergency toke place. They got me on leave without salary even though I had sick time and vacation time to be use.“
