Last week we learned that URA members who are using tuition remission for their dependent(s) and qualify for the NJ Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) have received updated term bills that reduced the amount of their remission applied. Since communications went directly to our dependent students, there is a good chance that as their parents, you may not have seen that email from the office of Financial Aid.
In the past, tuition remission was applied to the term bill first. Due to compliance with the state’s grant funding, Rutgers has changed the order of application of the grant and tuition remission.
Starting Fall 2025, the Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) will be applied first and your tuition remission benefit second to the remaining tuition balance. For some families, this left a greater amount owed for the Fall 2025 semester.
Excerpt from the email from the Financial Aid office to your dependent:
If you have extenuating circumstances and require additional financial assistance for the 2025-2026 academic year, please submit a New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) and Rutgers Dependent/Staff Tuition Remission Appeal Form. Please include all relevant details pertaining to the request for extra funding. Submission of an appeal does not guarantee that additional aid will be provided.
Please email union@ura-aft.org if you are experiencing additional issues to receive assistance with the process.
