URA’s Civil Rights Committee recognizes our union sister Karen Bellamy Lewis. She is a dedicated labor leader and Senior International Representative for the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE), a diverse union representing professional, technical, administrative, and associated workers across the United States and Canada. Since joining Local 195, IFPTE in 1987 as a State of New Jersey employee, Karen has been a tireless advocate for union members, serving on the Local 195 Executive Board and as a Business Representative before joining the International Union in 2001.

“African Americans have played a significant role in the history of the labor movement, advocating for civil rights and workers’ rights, even in the face of exclusion,” said Bellamy-Lewis “The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) provides a dedicated space within the labor movement for black trade unionists to address issues that matter to us and that are championed by us.”

Among her many labor and community activities, Bellamy-Lewis is a trustee of the Greater NJ Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. (CBTU’s mission) includes: “to achieve economic, political and social justice for every American.”
