In the context of our raises and other economics proposals, higher education accounting expert Dr. Howard Bunsis reported that Rutgers management is crying poverty due to a lack of out-of-state students, who pay approximately twice the New Jersey resident student rate. However, when analyzing the actual data, there is a 5.5% increase last year over the previous, according to IPEDS.

As reported last month (Rutgers University Hikes Student Tuition, Freezes Staff Hiring In $6B Budget | Newark, NJ Patch Mon, Jul 13, 2026), tuition for a typical full-time arts and sciences undergraduate who is a New Jersey resident will increase on average $448 for the academic year from $14,933 to $15,381. Fees vary by program, but average mandatory fees are estimated to increase by about $117 annually for in-state and out-of-state students from $3,891 to $4,008.

Meanwhile, tuition and mandatory fees for a typical full-time arts and sciences out-of-state undergraduate student will rise from $39,649 to $40,839. On average, housing and dining expenses will increase from $15,332 to $15,945 (4%).
