Standing Up For Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Job Security

On Thursday, May 23, URA President Christine O’Connell joined Rutgers AAUP-AFT colleagues and other labor union representatives from around the country in Washington, DC while President Holloway testified before the U.S. Congressional Committee of Education and the Workforce.

O’Connell made the following statement, “URA staff members strongly support First Amendment rights for all members of the higher education community. Currently staff members have no academic freedom protection or tenure for job protection which makes exercising their First Amendment rights and protections even more important for our members. Retaliation and investigations by Rutgers that are designed to intimidate staff and reduce their voices can not be tolerated. All members of the higher education community, including staff, deserve respect and dignity.
