FMLA and Beyond Report Back: Protect Your Job And Pay Your Bills

FMLA

Did you know:

  • A non-birthing spouse is entitled to NJ Family Leave Insurance income replacement to take time off to bond with a newborn.
  • Federal and State law give different lists of the family members you can care for under each law.
  • When to disclose your medical condition to your boss?
  • URA’s contract protects your sick days beyond FMLA’s 12 weeks. See: Article 44 – Sick Leave

Monday’s (Aug. 12) member information meeting focused on protecting our jobs and replacing income through the health challenges we face throughout our working lives.

URA Director Greg Rusciano spoke about assembling the puzzle of programs and protections for different health situations.

Health and Safety committee chair Alexandra Walczak, who supervises biology lab operations on Busch, walked members through what leave time and programs are available when welcoming a new child, as she and her husband did recently.

In the Q&A, members asked about taking as much leave as possible to bond with a new baby, the ADA accommodation process, and rules for calling out sick. Others noted how departments and One Source provide conflicting directions when our members are most in need of help

If you could not attend, the FMLA and Beyond workshop is available for your department or campus as a Lunch and Learn event. Contact safety@ura-aft.org to schedule a date.
