At its regular meeting on March 28, 2025, the University Senate adopted the following resolutions and recommendations:

At a time when the core values of higher education — free speech, the integrity of research, and democratic governance — are under growing threat, Rutgers Senate has taken a bold stance by sending a powerful message within the Big Ten Academic Alliance senates.

By proposing a Defense compact, we are not only defending the principles that define academia but also setting an example of solidarity and moral courage that resonates far beyond New Jersey.

This action reflects the best of Rutgers: a commitment to truth, a readiness to stand firm in the face of political pressure, and an unwavering belief in the role of universities as stewards of democracy.

The Rutgers Senate can appear to be many things — a villain, a hero, or merely a passing thought. It is clear that the Senate does not embody a single, consistent theme. My continued role as Chair is not to be right, but to engage openly in discourse and to gather the necessary data points for thoughtful consideration.

Rutgers Senate will continue to lead with purpose and conviction.

The Senate remains committed to serving the Rutgers community and contributing to the Board of Governors’ quarterly meetings.

Thank you all for your unwavering dedication to this important work—together—on behalf of those we serve and the future generations of Rutgers.
